Off-site volunteering

Picture
It is not necessary to come into the shelter if you would like to volunteer; there are quite a few activities that help us out off-site or long-distance. If you would like to volunteer off-site at Wheektown, please fill out the relevant form below for what you would like to help with.

Veggie gardening

Unfortunately we humans here at Wheektown suffer from a serious black thumb. Many times I have attempted to start a vegetable garden, and each time it lasted a varying amount of weeks before everything died. Despite how beneficial it would be for the guinea pigs, and how much it would reduce our food bills, I am just really bad at gardening. If you enjoy gardening and you have the space and time to do so, we would love for a volunteer to grow some vegetables for us. Or even if you have your own vegetable garden already but don't want to sacrifice your own harvest, there are plenty of plant parts that humans don't eat but which guinea pigs love. Such things include the leaves of pumpkin, squash, carrot, celery, corn, mulberry, raspberry, blackberry, zucchini, apple, and strawberry. Even your backyard weeds are a delicious treat for the guinea pigs.

The guinea pigs poo a lot. If we can put it to good use as fertilliser, then all the better.

Driving

Part of the long-distance adoption package at Wheektown is transport of the guinea pigs to the adopter. Unfortunately the ground animal transport service is unable to deviate from their standard route, and thus even with long distance transport the drop-off point may still be a few hours away from the adopter. If you enjoy driving and are happy to chauffeur guinea pigs between points, either from Wheektown to their adopter directly, or between two drop-off locations, we are always looking for lovely volunteers to help us out with transport. We can compensate for petrol where necessary.

Apply to be a volunteer driver

If we end up needing somebody in your area to help with transport, we will contact you.

Representative

Because some Wheektown guinea pigs are adopted to people out of the area, it can be quite a problem if there is reason to suspect mistreatment and we need to investigate. Representatives are very important in these situations, for someone in the area to conduct an inspection and, if necessary, seize the animals.

If we end up needing somebody in your area to act as a representative, we will contact you.
