Peanut and Caramel

Picture
Picture
Picture
Birthdate: 29th October 2017 (Caramel); unknown but estimate of early 2017 (Peanut)
Breed: Crested golden agouti shorthair (Peanut); Cream and cream agouti shorthair (Caramel)
These boys are a sweet and gentle pair that are easy to handle. Peanut is very placid and down to earth, whereas Caramel is a bit more adventurous and moody.

Backstory
Peanut was rescued from a backyard breeder in Glen Innes on the 2nd of September 2017 along with twelve other guinea pigs. He was being kept in the main herd with many boys and girls for indiscriminate breeding and fighting. He was selected at random from the boys to be rescued along with Charlie. Coffee, another pig from the rescue, was being kept in a group of 'unbred sows'; she was pregnant and later gave birth to Caramel and Cristi. Peanut and Caramel were adopted out 12 April 2018 but had to be returned 12 May 2018 due to unfortunate circumstances.

Peanut's personality
Peanut is a very placid and good-natured boy. He is quite tolerant of other guinea pigs and has proven to be fond of babies. He doesn't seem to mind human attention, generally being quite easy to handle. He is a very quiet guinea pig. He has quite a beautiful disposition and will often sit there snuggling up to Caramel, staring into space with a peaceful smile on his face.

Caramel's personality
Caramel is fairly adventurous and will sometimes do zoomies back and forth along the cage. He likes cuddling up to other guinea pigs and will toddle after Peanut and do whatever he's doing. Caramel is often content to sit quietly in your arms for a head scratch or cuddle, though can also be a bit moody at times. He is normally a quiet guinea pig but has lately started to chat to the humans and wheek a lot more. He loves Peanut and will make a huge fuss if separated from him.

Medical information
Peanut and Caramel have no known medical conditions. Peanut is neutered.

Mouse and Diego

Picture
Picture
Picture
Birthdate: Early January 2017 (estimated)
Breed: Cream argente piebald shorthair (Mouse); Brown, orange, and white tricolour shorthair (Diego)
Diego is an adventurous boy who loves rumblestrutting, popcorning, and running around. Mouse is a curious and bossy girl that has a lot of opinions.
Backstory
Mouse, Diego, and their littermate, Possum, were kept in a very dilapidated wooden hutch outside. The hutch was covered in mold and caked in uncleaned faeces. There were huge holes in it with sharp wood protruding into the cage. The guinea pigs had mild mite infestations and fungal infections on their faces, ears, and feet. Their owner had moved and didn't have time for them any more, so she posted the three for sale on the internet. Upon enquiry the owner confirmed that Mouse and Possum were both likely to be pregnant. Wheektown offered to take them. The owner agreed initially, but later became very hostile. She demanded $100 be paid for the three guinea pigs and that we also remove the hutch. Despite agreeing, she continued to be rude and consistently threatened the guinea pigs, creating more and more loops that we had to jump through. Eventually one of the guinea pigs, Possum, died, and we managed to pay the ransom on the surviving two and take them, despite numerous threats and insults. Mouse and Diego arrived at Wheektown on 22 April 2017. Diego was neutered and Mouse gave birth six weeks later to Bumble, Diaz, Peach, and Sphinx.

Diego's personality
Diego is an adventurous boy that loves to rumble. He rumbles while eating, running, and sometimes even resting, and he can often be found patrolling the perimeter of the cage while rumblestrutting. He loves to run around and popcorn, and will have random bouts of excitement where he just can't contain himself and dashes about, sometimes for well over half an hour. He is a very sweet animal that gets along with everyone he meets. He is easy to handle and loves cuddles with his humans.

Mouse's personality
Mouse is a big bossy girl that always wants to know what's going on. She loves to investigate any signs that may herald food, and is happy to eat from your hand or through the bars of the cage. She gets very excited at dinner time so some caution should be taken to make sure she doesn't mistake your fingers for food. She otherwise handles well and is content to rest against your chest for cuddles. She is quite a jealous wife and doesn't get along terribly well with other females, typically using her paws or her large bum to shove them away from Diego. Her ears flap when she wheeks, which is often.

Special requirements
At least the first 6 inches (15 cm) of the cage walls are not bars. Diego and Mouse are both avid bar chewers. They have much less tendency to chew when the bars are not at their level. Cages with no bars are preferred.

Medical information
Mouse and Diego appear to have some kind of idiopathic skin condition. Diego gets very dry feet with some horning around his toes, and Mouse gets occasional scabs on random parts of her body. Veterinary examinations and treatments have shown no indication of fungal or parasitic origin. They are not contagious and do not cause them any pain. Any flare-ups should be monitored but otherwise it is just a cosmetic issue. Diego is particularly sensitive to lucerne (alfalfa hay) and they should therefore not be given any lucerne even as a treat. Diego is neutered.

Bumble and Diaz

Picture
Picture
Picture
Birthdate: 30th May 2017
Breed: Cream argente piebald shorthair w/skirt (Diaz); Red piebald sheltie (Bumble)
This brother duo are charismatic and mischievous; don't expect furniture in the cage to remain in the same place for long. They love human attention and often demand it.
Backstory
Bumble and Diaz were born to Mouse at Wheektown, along with two sisters (Peach and Sphinx). They were adopted out in August but were returned in early February.

Bumble's personality
Bumble was a sweet little runt, born at only 64 grams, but has since grown into a huge boy with as much testosterone as any other boar. He often mounts Diaz as they vie for dominance, and loves to drag furniture around the cage and flip it toward places it's not meant to be. He is very curious and outgoing; he was the first baby to wheek and also the first one to explore - he even broke out and ran around the house at one day of age! He tolerates handling quite well and will often sit at the front of the cage, staring at the humans until he gets either cuddles or food.

Diaz's personality
Diaz is the perfect combination of Diego and Mouse's genes. Like his father, he loves rumblestrutting (he was rumbling by one week of age!), popcorning, and running around. Like his mother, he has a lot of opinions and is very vocal about them. Also like his parents, he is a naughty chewer and loves to get into mischief. He often mounts Bumble as they vie for dominance, and loves to rearrange the furniture in the cage. He tolerates handling quite well and will often sit at the front of the cage and stare mercilessly at the humans until they give him attention.

Special requirements
The boys are both very dominant and therefore require a large cage to keep the peace between them. Their cage must be at least 13 sq ft (equivalent to 2x5).

Medical information
The fur around Bumble's genitals grows excessively long and gets trapped in his penis, so he needs to have his bikini line shaved regularly to stop this happening. Like their father, both boys are particularly sensitive to lucerne (alfalfa hay) and should not be given it even as a treat.

Rajah

Picture
Birthdate: Unknown but estimate of March or April 2017
Breed: Tortoiseshell shorthair
Rajah has come a long way from the terrified boy he once was. He is still difficult to catch but once restrained he handles quite well. He hates other males but gets along very well with females.

Backstory
Rajah was rescued from a backyard breeder in Glen Innes on the 2nd of September 2017 along with twelve other guinea pigs. He was being kept in a section for 'unbred sows' and was rescued along with them. He impregnated three of the sows that were with him, producing six babies.

Rajah's personality
Rajah likes to come up to the bars and investigate, often sitting and staring at you while you go about your day. However he is still nervous of humans and can be difficult to catch. He calms down when secured in your arms and enjoys head scratches. He has an intense hatred of other males and cannot stand to be even in a cage near them; he would do best with a home where he is the only male. However he loves the ladies and would make a great husband for one or more sows.

Special requirements
No nearby males. Rajah hates other males and will sit at the bars and chatter all day long if he can see or hear one. If you have other males they should be located away from where Rajah will be living.

Medical information
Rajah has no known medical conditions.

Blizzard

Picture
Birthdate: Unknown but estimate of February 2017

Blizzard's personality
Blizzard is very placid. He is quite vocal when he wants something, usually food or attention. He is gentle and easy to handle. He loves to sit back and place his front paws on the rim of something (e.g. litterbox), watching over his cagemates and looking very much like a wise old wizard in the process. He is very good with young pigs.

Medical information
Blizzard has no known medical conditions.

Lola

Picture
Birthdate: Unknown but estimate of May 2017
Breed: Calico shorthair
Lola is quite a shy but peaceful lady that tends to mind her own business. She enjoys relaxing on fleece and hanging out in the hay.

Backstory
Lola was sold online when her owners lost interest. She and Amber had been thrown into a cage with a male (Blizzard), whom they were impregnated by. She gave birth to four babies (Galaxy, Yuri, Avalanche, Birch) and also fostered Amber's babies (Butterscotch, Jet, Nutella).

Lola's personality
Lola is a fairly peaceful lady who tends to mind her own business, but gets along well with others. She enjoys cuddling up in fleece or hanging out in the hay and munching the day away. She was fairly quiet at the start but has become much more vocal lately, wheeking down the house. She was a super mum that took on another litter when their mother died, raising seven healthy babies that gave her no peace, so she deserves a good home.

Medical information
Lola has no known medical conditions.

Coffee

Picture
Birthdate: Unknown but estimate of January 2017
Breed: Tortoiseshell shorthair

Coffee is quite nervous around people and, although she does calm down once in your arms, she still isn't too keen on human interaction. She likes spending time with other female guinea pigs and snuggling up with them. She has a particular fondness for climbing on top of another guinea pig and sitting on their back while they're trying to sleep or hide. She enjoys sitting at the front of the cage and watching the world go by, and will whine and stare at you incessantly until you hurry up with her dinner. She loves fleece and can often be found stretched on having a snooze on the soft fleece.

Medical information

Toffee

Picture
Birthdate: Unknown but estimate of January - March 2017
Breed: Tortoiseshell and white shorthair
Toffee is a beautiful and curious young lady who has had a rough life. She suffers from mental trauma which makes her a special needs pig, and needs a loving family who can keep her safe.

Backstory
Toffee was rescued from a backyard breeder in Glen Innes on the 2nd of September 2017 along with twelve other guinea pigs. She was being kept in a section for 'unbred sows'.

Toffee's personality
Toffee typically gets along well with other guinea pigs. She will take an interest in what you are doing, sometimes even eating out of your hand. She has come a very long way in her rehabilitation and handles relatively well; she can be quite wiggly and can be difficult to capture, but once she is secured in your arms she is generally content for a cuddle and a chin or head scratch. She will often climb up the bars with Honey when humans approach, eager to see what you're doing or if you have food. She is a very curious pig that has become much more adventurous and confident lately. She has a habit of sitting and crying at random, though physically nothing wrong can be found with her, so it is likely a result of psychological trauma; this has decreased significantly since being here. As well as this she has occasional bouts of aggression toward other pigs and will pick a fight for no apparent reason; this has happened twice and both times she was successfully reunited with her friends after a couple of hours cool down.

Special requirements
No dogs. Toffee survived a dog attack in the place she was rescued from. Considering her existing trauma, having dog sounds and smells nearby would probably cause a lot of psychological stress.

Medical information
Toffee has no known physical medical conditions, though she does suffer from psychological problems. She will sometimes sit and sob for no apparent reason, ignoring the world and staring blankly into space while she cries. Sometimes the crying will be hoarse, as though she has a throat problem, but no medical causes for this have ever been found. It varies considerably in frequency; she may go a whole week without an episode, or she may have multiple episodes a day. The episodes have decreased in number and intensity since being here. She also has had two known aggressive outbursts since being here, which resulted in fights with her otherwise amicable friends. In these cases she was able to be reunited with them without incident after a couple of hours cooling down. It is unlikely these outbursts would have a permanent effect on her relationships, but they are still something that needs to be monitored and intervened when necessary.

Backstory
Nacho and Marshmallow are sisters, born to Honey at Wheektown, along with a brother (Cosmo).

Nacho's personality
Nacho is a very vocal, very exuberant young lady. She loves to run around and climb over things, investigating and wheeking at every new thing or noise. She loves to snuggle with other guinea pigs. Yuri, Avalanche, and Birch

Picture
Picture
Picture
Birthdate: 27th February 2018
Breed: Crested PEW (pink-eyed-white) shorthair (Yuri, Avalanche); PEW (pink-eyed-white) shorthair (Birch)
These boys are incredibly sweet and gentle, but also adventurous. They love cuddles with their humans and are very chatty.

Two of these boys may be paired together, or one with another eligible male or with your existing guinea pig.
Backstory
The boys were born to Lola at Wheektown, along with a sister (Galaxy).

Yuri's personality
Yuri is a very big boy - the biggest born at the shelter. Sometimes he'll push his weight around but for the most part he is a gentle giant, content to relax with his brothers, or run around zooming and popcorning like a maniac. He is inquisitive and comes up to the front of the cage to check out what the humans are doing. He handles very well and loves telling everyone about his day.

Avalanche's personality
Avalanche is a very sweet and easy to handle boy. He is calm around humans and will even let you reach into the cage and stroke his head or give a chin scratch. He is easily picked up and handled, and enjoys cuddles. He is placid with other guinea pigs and spends most of his time relaxing in the hay or popcorning.

Birch's personality
Birch is the more reserved and skittish of the boys, but is still quite easy to handle. He loves tunnels and running around and popcorning, and can go a bit crazy when he's excited. He is a very chatty boy who loves telling the humans all about his day.

Special requirements
Smaller bar gaps. Because the boys are still babies, many cage bars would be too far apart to prevent them from climbing through and either escaping or getting stuck. Until they grow up the cages should have gaps no bigger than 2 cm wide.

Medical information
The boys do not have any known medical conditions.
